2013-2014 Business Technology Association Officer Election

Each year, the dealer members of the Business Technology Association elect several volunteers to serve as officers at the district and national levels. One volunteer from each district is appointed to serve on the national BTA Board of Directors alongside the national officer team. The annual term is July 1 through June 30. A total of eight individuals serve on the national board, setting policy for the association and providing guidance on the development of member programs. The board members meet in person two to three times each year and otherwise meet via a conference call each month.

Todd J. Fitzsimons, director of business development at Network Imaging LLC, Southington, Conn., will serve as 2013-2014 BTA national president. Fitzsimons began his career in the document solutions industry in 1989 working for a local Canon dealership. In 1991, he joined Hallet and Co. as sales manager. In 1997, he purchased the dealership and shortly after changed the name to Network Imaging LLC. In January 2013, he merged Network Imaging with Automated Business Solutions of Rhode Island. The 54-year-old dealership sells Sharp, Kyocera, Lexmark and Muratec and also offers document management, network services and mailing solutions. The company's territory covers Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Fitzsimons, who was named BTA's Volunteer of the Year in 2011, currently serves as BTA's national president-elect.

Gerry Purvis, owner and president of Purvis Business Machines, a Toshiba and Copystar dealer in Meridian, Miss., will serve as 2013-2014 BTA Southeast president. He has been with Purvis Business Machines since 1979. Purvis is a graduate of Meridian Community College and a U.S. Army veteran. Purvis and his wife Betty have one daughter and they attend Northpark Church. With the firm belief that education is one of the keys to success, he has become involved in his community by serving as an officer and board member on the Meridian Community College Foundation. He currently serves as BTA Southeast president-elect.

Linda Hayes, president of Purcell's Business Products, Campbellsville, Ky., will serve as 2013-2014 BTA Southeast immediate past president. Purcell’s has been in business since 1963. Hayes joined Purcell's with her husband Dan in August of 1983 and she has worn many hats over the last 30 years. In 2010, she took total ownership of Purcell's when Dan moved into another industry-related position. She and Dan have four children and seven grandchildren, and are members of Campbellsville Baptist Church. Hayes is a 13-year breast cancer survivor and is involved in promoting breast health for women and men. She currently serves as BTA Southeast president.

Following are brief profiles of the national officer candidates and BTA Southeast candidates. At the bottom of this page is a link to an online ballot. BTA appreciates your willingness to cast your vote in this election process.

National President-Elect: Ron Hulett
Ron Hulett is president and CEO of U.S. Business Systems Inc., located in Elkhart, Ind. Hulett formed the company in 1992 with three business partners, after he worked for a short time at another independent dealership. His dealership has since grown into a two-facility business with 30 employees. The $4 million-plus dealership serves northern Indiana and southern Michigan. It represents Kyocera, Lanier and Sharp, and sells and supports many different office technology products as well as workflow and document management software. Hulett, who was named BTA's Volunteer of the Year in 2012, currently serves as BTA's national vice president.

National Vice President: Dave Quint
Dave Quint is president and CEO of Advanced Systems Inc., located in Waterloo, Iowa. Advanced Systems Inc. is a 55-year-old corporation that now includes eight offices covering a large part of northern and eastern Iowa, overlapping into Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota. The dealership's primary manufacturers are Canon and Lexmark, and the company also offers document management and managed print solutions. Quint started with Advanced Systems Inc. in 1989 as a territory sales associate and has held various sales and management positions throughout his career with the company. Quint currently serves as president of BTA Mid-America.

BTA Southeast District President-Elect: John Eckstrom
John Eckstrom is president and CEO of Carolina Business Equipment (CBE), Columbia, S.C. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in accounting. After college, he went to a local firm working in the tax department and then moved to a firm where his focus was bank auditing. After two years, Eckstrom moved into private business where he became branch controller for a Fortune 500 company. He then became director of finance for a manufacturing company and was CFO to a mechanical contracting firm. Eckstrom came to CBE in November 1994 as the company's controller and moved into the general manager position in March 1995. At the end of 1995, he purchased half of the company and became its president. In October 2000, Eckstrom purchased the rest of the company. CBE's corporate office is located in Columbia, S.C., and over the past 10 years the company has moved into three new markets, including Charleston and Florence, S.C., and Augusta, Ga. CBE has also acquired two companies in the past two years and employs 38 people. Since 1995, CBE has enjoyed both steady growth and profitability.

BTA Southeast District Board Member: Terry Chapman
Terry Chapman is president of Business Electronics Corp., Birmingham, Ala. He has served as president of the company, a Toshiba and Lanier dealership, since 1988. He is a graduate of Birmingham Southern College and worked in the banking industry prior to his current role. Chapman was named BTA's Volunteer of the Year in 2008 and has served in several positions on the BTA Southeast board, including BTA Southeast president. He currently serves as BTA national president.

BTA Southeast District Board Member: Bob Christensen
Bob Christensen is president of Danwood America Inc., Tampa, Fla. He has worked in the office technology industry for more than 28 years, starting as a sales representative for a Canon dealership in South Bend, Ind. Since then, Christensen has held various leadership roles in the dealer channel. From August 1986 to February 1993, he served as branch sales manager for Alco Standard Corp. In 1993, Christensen moved to IKON Office Solutions, where he held several positions including vice president of customer service for the Northeast region, area vice president – River Cities and area vice president – Michigan. In September 2012, Christensen moved to Ricoh and became director of sales for the company's Midwest region. In January 2012, he joined Danwood America as president. The company has offices in Tampa, Orlando and Miami, Fla.

BTA Southeast District Board Member: Brian Snow
Brian Snow is president of Advanced Business Systems, Tallahassee, Fla. He has been with the company for 20 years. Starting as an inside sales rep and working his way through the service, sales and administration departments, Snow recently purchased Advanced from his father. With his years of experience, Snow's new focus is to take Advanced into the next phase of the imaging industry's evolution. He is a graduate of Florida State University and received a degree in finance.
