BTA member Preferred Office Products is celebrating its 50th anniversary in business. The third-generation family-owned company currently has two locations, one in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and a second location in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Preferred Office Products has chosen to celebrate with a unique community event, a brand refresh, a fleet of service vehicles and a slight adjustment to the company's name: Preferred Office Technologies.

In 1968, AB Dick Products of Fort Smith was founded by Joe Dickinson Sr. to provide document solutions to professional offices in a booming Fort Smith economy. The company originally sold and serviced a line of duplicators, mimeographs and printing presses. After more than 30 years in operation, AB Dick Products of Fort Smith changed its name to Preferred Office Products, reflecting changes in customer needs. Document solutions became more dependent on technologically advanced equipment and supplies became a staple offering. In April 2018, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary in business. Now in its third generation of family ownership, customers are increasingly dependent upon technology to drive their offices.

Modern office technology is the catalyst for a slight adjustment to the corporation's title. Today, Preferred Office Technologies exists to provide document and information technology solutions through a tailored suite of products and services.

"50 years ago, the only way to archive or reproduce corporate information was on paper," said Alan Dickinson, president, Preferred Office Technologies. "Today, that information is scattered across multiple media formats. Most of it still exists on paper, but you can also add desktops, laptops, servers, mobile devices, cloud storage and trash cans. It is an organizational nightmare and a devourer of productivity."

"That's where we come in," Dickinson said. "Preferred Office Technologies provides professional consultation and the tools necessary to reduce waste in daily business processes. It's what our clients have come to depend on and it's what truly sets us apart. We don't just deliver a box with a signature. We deliver technology customized to your office needs, designed to drive efficiency."

Preferred Office Technologies has been a certified Canon dealer for more than 35 years. It is also a certified Ricoh/Lanier dealer and it employs a team of service technicians qualified to maintain and repair Xerox, HP and Lexmark equipment. Preferred manages more than 6,000 service contracts with printers and copier/MFPs for companies with locations across the United States. Its client list proves the company's agility with a healthy mixture of clients, from publicly traded corporations to family-owned small businesses. For more than a decade, Preferred Office Technologies has been providing managed IT services for business and government entities throughout the region with a fully staffed IT department under the guidance of Nathan Handley. Among Handley's list of qualifications is the experience of having built critical information infrastructure for NASA. In 2009, Preferred became an official distributor for Laserfiche, an electronic document management software designed to store, organize and manage documents in an electronic format.

Preferred Office Technologies continues to strive for improvement. By providing customers the tools and software necessary to "go paperless," and offering printers and copier/MFPs with smarter technology and enhanced energy efficiency, the company hopes to create a positive environmental impact. In recognition of the environmental change they strive to create, Preferred Office Technologies is celebrating its 50th anniversary by planting 50 trees around its local service area. The company is not doing it alone; it is reaching out to its own customers with an invitation to get involved in the effort by volunteering to plant a tree on their property.

The trees are scheduled to be delivered throughout the week following Earth Day.
